Whilst backing a motion to refuse prisoners the right to vote, Eleanor Laing calls for further debate to consider the details. She believes that we can continue with the British principle that the loss of the right to vote is part of the punishment for those who commit a serious crime but, at the same time, fulfill our obligations to the rule of law under the European convention. She proposes a distinction between different crimes so that only a very small category of prisoners would be able to vote.  read more »
