3rd January 2020
A team from Debden Park High School retained the Epping Forest Schools Parliamentary Debating Competition organised by Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing.

Year 10 students Matthew Carter and Dannysa Ngenge took on seven other schools in this year's competition which was held at Debden Park High School.

The Debden Park team had to put their case in favour of the Motion "That this House believes that mass protests about Climate Change are unnecessary and counterproductive as the danger to the planet has already been recognised".

The audience voted against the Motion.

The pair were presented with the trophy which the school will hold for a year, and individual trophies to keep.

The teams from Epping St John's School (Year 11 students Patrick Machin and Alex Kyriacou) and Chigwell School (Year 12 student Nichita Mitrea and Year 13 student Filip Novakovic) were joint runners-up.

West Hatch High School student Dylan Panesar (Year 11) was awarded the prize for the best individual performance.

Also taking part were Davenant Foundation School, King Harold Academy, Roding Valley High School and Braeside School.

The judges were Epping Forest Conservative Association president and county councillor Valerie Metcalfe, Epping Forest Conservative Association chairman and district councillor Les Burrows, former Theydon Bois Primary School headteacher Elspeth Bonds and Everything Epping Forest owner David Jackman.

As winners, Debden Park High School will be invited to host the competition again next year.
