Debden Park High School

27th April 2017

The purpose-built facilities for Sixth Form students at Debden Park High School have been praised by Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing.

Mrs Laing was given a tour of The Hive building when she visited the Willingale Road school with county councillor and vice-chairman of governors Valerie Metcalfe.

Mrs Laing was shown round by the school's executive head boys and head girls and was also accompanied by Executive Headteacher Christian Cavanagh, Head of School Helen Gascoyne, Chairman of Governors James Lillingston and Director of Sixth Form Hayley Martin-Burns.

Mrs Laing said: "I was delighted to be shown around The Hive and to have the opportunity to meet many of the Sixth Form students who are making good use of these wonderful facilities.

"The battle to get the sixth form consortium for the four schools up and running took many years.

"There were several obstacles to be overcome and I would like to pay tribute to the teachers and headteachers who have had the vision and the energy to make it work.

"The project would not have succeeded if it had not been for the driving force of county councillor Valerie Metcalfe. She deserves great praise for her determination and dedication to improving educational opportunities for all the children of our area.

"I am delighted to see how well the new Sixth Form is working and to hear directly from the students how much they are enjoying their studies.”

The Hive gets its name from the school motto 'It is all about the Bs' - which include Be Proud, Be Involved, Be Challenged, Be Inspired and Be Exceptional.

The building was opened for the start of the last academic year, and was officially opened last October by Mrs Metcalfe.

The Hive, just yards from the main school building, was 'delivered' as a 'made to measure' structure which the school describes as a 'Tardis'.

Relatively small-looking from the outside, the two-storey building has eight classrooms as well as a students' common room and independent study space, plus offices and toilets.
