Professor Chris Hudson

8th March 2020

Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing has paid tribute to Professor Chris Hudson - a former North Weald Bassett parish councillor - who devoted his career to helping others through his work in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Professor Hudson had been a parish councillor for the Thornwood ward.

Among the local groups and organisations he was involved with were the Epping Forest User Forum run by the then Epping Forest Primary Care Trust.

Professor Hudson’s son, Dr Neil Hudson, was elected the Conservative Member of Parliament for Penrith and The Borders at last December’s General Election.

He dedicated his Maiden Speech to his father when he addressed the House of Commons five days after his father died last month.

Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor, who was in the Speaker’s Chair for Dr Hudson’s speech, described Professor Chris Hudson, who had lived in Woodside, Thornwood, as “unique”.

Dr Hudson, a veterinary surgeon, spoke about his father’s career stating: “He devoted his life to the service of his patients in the NHS and in Australia, and during periods spent in Nigeria and Pakistan.

“He notably worked to reduce maternal mortality and postpartum complications in the developing world.

“He delivered countless babies and saved countless lives through pioneering surgery in this area and, especially, in cancer surgery - those procedures are still making a difference today.

“In addition, he trained and mentored so many health professionals right up until the end.

“I am so sorry that he is not here today, but he is at peace now. With all my heart and soul: thank you, mum and dad. God bless you, dad. This one’s for you.”

Dame Eleanor told the House: “I would also like to pay tribute to Professor Hudson on behalf of the whole community in Epping Forest where he will be very greatly missed not only for his considerable achievements during a distinguished medical career but for the good work he did and the charitable causes he helped in our local community.

“He was unique, and he would be a very proud man today.”

Professor Hudson was emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at Barts, The Mothers' and Homerton Hospitals in London.

He studied at Cambridge University before beginning a 65-year association with Barts.

His funeral will be held at St Mary’s Church, Theydon Bois, at 2.30pm on Wednesday (March 11).
