UK Tree of the Year

11th December 2017

News that an oak tree in Epping Forest has won the Woodland Trust's UK Tree of the Year accolade has been welcomed by Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing.

Mrs Laing said the oak at Gilwell Park was "another fine example of what helps makes our forest such a great place".

The magnificent oak tree, in the grounds of the Scout Association's headquarters, received 1,792 votes in a public poll.

Votes were cast to not only celebrate the visual aspects of the tree but the fantastic story it tells.
The Gilwell Oak has overseen the growth of a local scout group since the early 20th century and is still regarded as a tribute to the scouting movement today.

Mrs Laing said: "Epping Forest is steeped in history with so many wonderful ponds, views - and trees - and now a tree that has been nationally recognised.

"We are very proud of the Forest's connection with the Scouts and all that Scouting has achieved over the years. This is another example of what helps make our Forest such a great place."

The Gilwell Oak won the England shortlist and was chosen by a panel of Woodland Trust experts  to be its UK Tree of the Year.

The tree will now represent the UK at the European Tree of the Year in 2018.
